The Juneau Icefield Research Program has been conducting research on the Juneau Icefield continuously since 1946. This represents one of the longest periods of glacier research in the United States. The majority of the work has been performed on the Juneau Icefield, however studies in other glaciological provinces of Alaska have been conducted. This work includes periodic aerial surveys of glacier termini along the coast of southeast Alaska and northward along the coast from Glacier Bay to Cordova. This work has been carried out by the Foundation for Glacier and Environmental Research, which is the parent organization of the Juneau Icefield Research Program.

While the data collected on the Juneau Icefield is important in explaining the climate/glacier relationship, it must be examined and analyzed in relation to glaciological and meteorological data collected elsewhere in the world by other organizations. In this way, a holistic understanding of the global climate may be realized. The primary reason for the existence of The Crevasse Zone is to provide a means for the dissemination of glacier survey data collected on the Juneau Icefield so that others may compare conditions in Alaska with conditions at the particular areas where they are working. Therefore, in the spirit of data sharing, I've compiled a list of related glaciological research, by other organizations, in which visitors to The Crevasse Zone might be interested.

A quick search of the Internet yields thousands of sites related to glaciers and glaciology. Obviously, I can't link to all of them here. If you know of a particularly compelling site that you think should be linked to The Crevasse Zone, let me know and I'll insert a link. Also, if you would like to put a link to The Crevasse Zone in your website, I'd be pleased to hear from you.

A world-class wave ogive

If you're curious about the picture that's the background of this page, here's the color version. This is one of a series of wave ogives at the base of the Vaughan Lewis Icefall on the Juneau Icefield. This icefall and its wave ogives have been featured in several glacier-related books and articles, most notably in Post and LaChapelle's classic Glacier Ice. The amplitude of these wave ogives is on the order of 25 meters and they have a wavelength of around 175 meters. Click the photo to see a larger version.
